Race & Ethnicity Data Updates

This feature went live on April 9, 2025

Data migration will occur automatically for all customers. If you have any questions, please contact support@binti.com.

What is changing?

To make reporting on demographic data easier for your agency, Binti is changing the way we collect information about race and ethnicity to match federal standards. Previously, we combined race and ethnicity into one question. Now we will use two questions to collect this information: 1) “Are you of Hispanic or Latino origin?” and 2) “What is your race?”

You will see these new questions across Binti anywhere we ask about a person’s race and ethnicity, including for children and adults. An additional option "Abandoned" will appear for children.

What will happen with my existing data?

Binti will automatically migrate answers from the previous ethnicity question to the new two question format. If "Hispanic/Latinx" was not previously selected, the question "Are you of Hispanic or Latino origin?" will be marked as "unknown".

Do I need to do anything?

No, Binti will automatically migrate answers from the previous ethnicity question to the new two question format.

How does this impact API?

For our API customers, this update has been designed to ensure that existing API integrations remain fully functional. While you can continue using the previous structure indefinitely, we recommend transitioning to Binti’s updated format in the near future for better alignment and consistency.

If you wish to adopt the newly structured data, which aligns more closely with federal standards, it is available for use today. We have introduced new fields—"races", "hispanic-or-latino-ethnicity", and "races-array"—to provide access to the updated data. To maintain compatibility with legacy integrations, the existing "ethnicities" and "ethnicities_array" fields will remain unchanged.

Ethnicity Category Updates

  • If "Hispanic or Latinx" was selected in the previous ethnicity question, "Yes" will automatically be selected in the new Hispanic/Latino Ethnicity question. If it was not selected, unknown will be selected.

  • If a specific ethnicity was previously chosen under "Hispanic/Latinx" (e.g., "South American"), both "Yes" and the corresponding category (e.g., "South American") will be selected in the new structure.

  • Certain ethnicities previously categorized under "Central American" or "South American" have been moved into distinct categories:

    • Cuban
    • Dominican
    • Mexican/Mexican American/Chicano
    • Puerto Rican
  • "Ecuadoran" has been corrected from "Central American" to "South American."

Race Category Updates

  • If "Hispanic/Latinx" was the only race selected previously, the individual will not have a race listed under the new structure.

  • Middle Eastern or North African (MENA) is now a nested category under "White or Caucasian."

  • Armenian has been reclassified from "Middle Eastern or North African > Middle Eastern" to "White or Caucasian," moving up one nested level.

  • The former "White or Caucasian > Middle Eastern" category is now "Middle Eastern/North African" under "White or Caucasian."

  • "Somalian" under "Black or African American" has been updated to "Somali."

  • "Jamaican" and "Haitian" remain under "Black or African American" but are now grouped within the new "Caribbean" sub-category.

  • "Central American" under "White or Caucasian" has been moved to "Other White or Caucasian" to prevent confusion with Hispanic/Latino origin classifications.

  • "Mixed - Not Part Hawaiian / Not Part Hispanic" under "Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander" has been moved to "Other Pacific Islander" for clarity.

  • "Unable to Determine" has been renamed "Unknown" to align with AFCARS federal reporting terminology.
