The genogram uses lines, highlights, and a banner to show how people are connected and where Binti needs more information. This article is for caseworkers and Family Finding workers. It explains what each one means and what to do about it.
What do the lines mean?
- A solid line is a recorded relationship. You don’t need to do anything.
- A dashed blue line is a connection Binti inferred from strong recorded ties. The card says “(inferred).” Confirm the relationship if you can.
- A dotted blue line is a low-confidence inferred connection. The card says “(inferred).” Check the relationship and record what’s true.
A Line Confidence legend appears only when the tree has at least one inferred line.
What do highlighted cards mean?
- A red outline with a warning icon means the recorded biological relationships can’t all be true. For example, a child has two biological mothers, more than two biological parents, or more than four biological grandparents. Correct the Relationship Description or Lineage Type.
- A yellow outline with a warning icon means Binti can’t link the person yet, because there’s no path from them to the child. Answer the “Who is their…?” prompt.
- A small blue “Missing info” tag means a field Binti needs is blank. Fill in the field.
- A blue outline marks the card you’re working on. It’s the one you selected, or the one open in the Actions sidebar.
To fix highlighted cards, see How do I fix highlighted connections on the genogram?
What does the banner above the genogram mean?
The banner counts how many of the relatives on screen have conflicting or unlinkable relationship information. For example, “4 of 9 relatives shown have conflicting or unlinkable relationship information.” Work through the Actions sidebar to bring the count down.
How are relatives arranged?
Relatives are lined up in rows by generation. The child’s first-degree relatives are connected automatically. Relatives Binti can’t link yet either float near their generation’s row or appear in a section below the diagram.
What are the sections below the diagram?
Cards Binti can’t place appear below the diagram under one of these headings:
- Related — Kinship Not Specified
- Relationship to Child Unknown
- Relatives Not Yet Placed
- Verified Not Connected to Child
Can I change what the genogram shows?
Yes. Two checkboxes at the top of the Actions sidebar change the view:
- “Show additional connections below the diagram” is on by default. Turn it off to hide the section below the diagram and every card in it.
- “Show only relatives with connecting lines” is available on the Relatives view only. Turn it on to move floating relatives into “Relatives Not Yet Placed,” so the tree shows only people connected by a line.
