How do I fix highlighted connections on the genogram?

When Binti can’t place a relative on the genogram, or finds a conflict in the relationship details, it highlights the card and asks you for exactly what it needs. This article is for caseworkers and Family Finding workers. It explains three ways to answer, starting with the fastest.

How do I fix a highlighted connection from the Actions sidebar?

  1. Open the Actions sidebar on the right side of the genogram. If it’s collapsed, click “Actions” on the right edge. The number there shows how many people need attention. You can also click a highlighted card to jump straight to that person in the sidebar.

  2. Find the person. The sidebar lists everyone who needs attention: anyone with a conflict, anyone Binti can’t link, and anyone in “Related — Kinship Not Specified,” “Relationship to Child Unknown,” or “Relatives Not Yet Placed.” Fictive kin and people in “Verified Not Connected to Child” aren’t listed.
  3. Edit the person’s Relationship Description, Parental Lineage, and Lineage Type. A † next to a field means Binti needs it to link the person.
  4. Answer any prompts, such as “Who is their parent / child / sibling / partner?” You can pick more than one person. Each answer creates a connection between those two people.
  5. Click “Confirm” to save. The genogram redraws itself, and the person leaves the list once they’re linked. To set someone aside for now, click “Skip.” Skipped people come back when you reload the page.

Can I fix a connection from the person’s card?

Yes.

  1. Click the card to open the relationship window. If the card is highlighted, the Actions sidebar opens first. After you skip that person, clicking the card opens the window.
  2. Edit the details and answer the prompts right in the window. After any change, “Close” becomes “Save & Close.” The × closes the window without saving.

  3. Or use the actions at the bottom of the window: “Edit [Relative]’s Relationship to [Child],” “Add/Edit Other Relationships for [Relative],” “Launch Potential Kin Online Search,” or “Record New Contact.”

Please note: Only workers who can edit the relationship can edit it in the window.

Can I fix a connection on the Edit Relationship page?

Yes. The Edit Relationship page shows the same prompts as the sidebar, highlighted in yellow, with a note at the top explaining that Binti needs more detail to link the connection. Answering the prompts creates the same connections.

What does a fix look like?

Uncle Bob is a maternal uncle and the brother of the child’s mom, Sally. His card isn’t connected to anyone, so it’s highlighted yellow, and he’s listed in the Actions sidebar. His prompt asks, “Who is their sibling?” Pick Sally and click “Confirm.” The genogram redraws itself, links Bob to Sally, and Bob leaves the sidebar.

What should I know before I answer the prompts?

  • If you choose “Unknown / not listed” in a prompt, nothing is saved, so the person stays highlighted.
  • Prompts are optional. Only missing required fields stop you from clicking “Confirm.”
  • If you link someone to a relative who isn’t on the tree yet, they stay highlighted until that relative is connected too.
